ACCELERATING THE ENERGY TRANSITION

At AVANGRID, we are accelerating the transformation to a cleaner tomorrow.

Our Environmental, Social, Governance, and Financial (ESG+F) led strategy shapes our business decisions and helps further our sustainability commitments.

We believe in a sustainable energy future. And we’re making it a reality—by investing in clean, renewable resources and supporting research in smart grid innovation. We’re furthering energy conservation, too, by sharing strategies to lessen in-home usage and promoting the use of electric and hybrid vehicles. Beyond these individual actions, we support responsible environmental policies and are reducing our own carbon impact.

  • In 2021, we invested $2.2 billion in our gas and electric companies to better serve our customers and communities and to make critical system enhancements, as part of a total planned capital spend of more than $20 billion across our business from 2020 to 2025.
  • Today we also generate enough clean energy to power nearly two million homes, with over 8.8 gigawatts (GW) of capacity across 22 states, and we’re just getting started. For example, in 2021 we began construction on our joint venture project, Vineyard Wind 1, the first commercial-scale offshore wind project to break ground in the United States, and we continue to expand our onshore wind and solar 18 GW portfolio with approximately 1 GW currently under construction.

In 2017, we became the first US utility to set a goal for carbon neutrality from owned and controlled sources by 2035. We’ve made great strides towards our goals and plan to significantly increase the renewable energy we generate while achieving net zero emissions. Our commitments include converting the majority of our fleet to clean energy vehicles by 2030, increasing the amount of renewable energy we consume in our own operations, installing EV charging stations to power our fleet, providing access to EV charging for our employees, and much more.

Our investments in Avangrid Networks and Avangrid Renewables are all about accelerating transformation to a clean energy future with more renewable, sustainable power and a more resilient and reliable energy infrastructure that supports our communities and our planet.

CREATING JOBS AND INVESTING IN OUR CUSTOMERS

Sustainability isn’t just about reducing our reliance on combustible energy sources, it’s also about creating thousands of new jobs in a revitalized energy industry.

We have committed over $20 billion through 2025 to help deliver on these commitments. We’re also dedicating the following funds to support our drive toward sustainability:

  • Over $10 billion toward our nation-leading offshore wind projects on the East Coast, including the first large-scale project in the U.S. (Vineyard Wind 1, Commonwealth Wind, Park City Wind, and Kitty Hawk Wind).
  • Through our joint venture, first-in-the-nation Vineyard Wind 1 project, we were proud to enter into the first Project Labor Agreement for an offshore wind project in the United States with the Massachusetts Building Trades and local union affiliates.
  • $194 million toward charging infrastructure–including more than 15,000 chargers and make-ready charging solutions for commercial vehicles and transit buses nationwide.

And while we’re creating jobs with every step we take toward the sustainable future, we’re also working hard to provide smart energy solutions for our customers. We’re employing smart meters and web portals to give customers more control over how they use energy; empowering them to manage their energy usage.

At the same time, we’re using smart grid and demand-response technologies to enable remote energy management programs that reward customers for shifting their energy usage away from peak usage times, benefitting the whole grid and all its users.

PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST

We believe strong communities are more sustainable and that business has a role in building a better society.

Whether that’s improving opportunities for our employees, contributing to the economic development of our communities, or ensuring our customers have access to safe and reliable service for their energy needs…we’re here to help. And that extends beyond what we do to power an ever more connected world.

To show our support for diversity and equality inside and outside of our organization, we’ve signed EEI’s Diversity & Inclusion Commitment, and the Parity for Progress and PwC CEO Commitment. We’ve also committed to increasing our supplier diversity spend to $300 million by 2025.

Through the Avangrid Foundation, we’ve been able to help build vital and healthy communities and improve the lives of people in our communities through grants, scholarships and matching gifts.

As a company in partnership with the Foundation we have contributed over $28 million in donations & partnerships with >300 organizations since 2002.

  • $46 million contributed to low income programs in 2019.
  • Facilitated more than $50 million contributed lease payments to landowners for projects like wind farms in 2019.
